O jornalista australiano Julian Assange foi liberado da prisão de segurança máxima onde estava detido há mais de cinco anos na capital do Reino Unido, Londres, nesta segunda-feira (24).

O jornalista enfrenta 18 acusações de um inquérito de 2019, no qual é acusado de participar no vazamento de documentos confidenciais do governo dos Estados Unidos. A pena máxima para os crimes é de 175 anos de prisão, embora uma condenação de tanto tempo fosse improvável.

Os arquivos foram fornecidos pela ex-analista de inteligência do Exército, Chelsea Manning, em 2010 e 2011.

A agência de notícias AFP afirma que Assange concordou em se declarar culpado em um tribunal dos Estados Unidos por revelar segredos militares, em troca da sua liberdade. O acordo encerraria assim um longo drama legal.

A AFP diz que Assange comparecerá a um tribunal das Ilhas Marianas do Norte, um território estadunidense de 50 mil habitantes no Pacífico. Segundo o acordo, ele se declarará culpado de conspiração para obter e disseminar informações de defesa nacional. A audiência será realizada às 20h desta terça-feira (horário de Brasília).

A audiência pode ser realizada lá porque os americanos têm um Tribunal Distrital nas Ilhas Marianas, que são um “estado livremente associado” aos Estados Unidos.

Segundo a Justiça americana, na audiência o fundador do WikiLeaks deve ser sentenciado a 62 meses de prisão. Como ele já cumpriu mais que 62 meses de prisão no Reino Unido, será liberto.

“Julian Assange está livre. Ele deixou a prisão de segurança máxima de Belmarsh na manhã de 24 de junho, depois de ter passado 1.901 dias lá. Ele recebeu fiança do Supremo Tribunal de Londres e foi liberto no aeroporto de Stanstead durante a tarde, onde embarcou em um avião e partiu do Reino Unido.

Este é o resultado de uma campanha global que abrangeu organizadores de base, defensores da liberdade de imprensa, legisladores e líderes de todo o espectro político, até às Nações Unidas.

Isto criou espaço para um longo período de negociações com o Departamento de Justiça dos EUA, conduzindo a um acordo que ainda não foi formalmente finalizado. Forneceremos mais informações o mais breve possível.

Depois de mais de cinco anos numa cela de 2×3 metros, isolado 23 horas por dia, ele em breve se reunirá com sua esposa Stella Assange e seus filhos, que só conheceram o pai atrás das grades.

A mulher de Julian, Stella Assange, publicou post no X sobre a libertação do marido:

“Palavras não podem expressar nossa imensa gratidão a VOCÊS — sim, VOCÊS, que se mobilizaram durante anos e anos para tornar isso realidade. OBRIGADO. Obrigado. OBRIGADO”.

Assange preso na Inglaterra

O fundador do WikiLeaks ficou preso na Inglaterra desde 2019, após de passar sete anos confinado na embaixada do Equador em Londres, onde buscou refúgio para evitar a extradição por acusações de agressão sexual na Suécia, que mais tarde foram retiradas.

Antes do julgamento, a esposa de Assange fez um alerta sobre o estado de saúde frágil do australiano de 52 anos.

“A saúde dele está piorando, física e mentalmente. A vida dele corre perigo a cada dia que permanece na prisão e, se for extraditado, ele vai morrer”, afirmou Stella Assange no fim de maio.
