O número de mortos nos terremotos que atingiram o norte da Venezuela na quarta-feira (24) subiu para 589, segundo balanço provisório divulgado pelo governo nesta quinta-feira (25). As autoridades também informaram que 2.980 pessoas ficaram feridas, cerca de 200 seguem sob os escombros e 250 edifícios desabaram ou sofreram danos. Enquanto as equipes de resgate continuam as buscas, grupos formados por moradores já registram mais de 24 mil desaparecidos.
Os dois terremotos ocorreram em sequência na noite de quarta-feira (24) e atingiram a região norte da Venezuela, onde está localizada Caracas. Os tremores provocaram desabamentos e deixaram um rastro de destruição na capital e em cidades vizinhas. Segundo as autoridades, foram os sismos mais fortes registrados no país em mais de 100 anos.
O balanço foi divulgado pela presidente interina, Delcy Rodríguez, que ressaltou que os números ainda são provisórios. A Organização das Nações Unidas (ONU) e o Serviço Geológico dos Estados Unidos (USGS) avaliam que o total de vítimas pode ser maior, devido à intensidade dos tremores, aos danos na infraestrutura e à alta densidade populacional das áreas atingidas.
Delcy Rodríguez também anunciou que o governo vai militarizar o estado de La Guaira, uma das regiões mais afetadas pelos terremotos e incluída na zona de desastre decretada pelas autoridades.
