“Por que o Michael não vem aqui e filma as praias, que são maravilhosas, o Pão de Açúcar? Por que não filma as praias da Bahia ou vai à Amazônia e mostra suas riquezas? No meu entender, deve haver muito cuidado com isso”, implicou. “Daqui para frente temos que nos unir para mudar essa cara do Brasil ruim. Chegou o momento de mostrarmos as coisas boas do Brasil. Não temos que nos sujeitar a mostrar somente as coisas ruins”.
Pelé reforçava o coro dos cariocas descontentes. O secretário de Indústria, Comércio e Turismo do Rio, Ronaldo Cezar Coelho, promoveu uma campanha “patriótica” contra a trupe de Michael Jackson. Para o representante do governo estadual, exibir as favelas brasileiras pelo mundo seria um desserviço ao país, o que acabaria prejudicando a nossa economia etc etc. Haja blablablá nos microfones do rádio e dos telejornais.
A campanha de Coelho era tão radical que chegou a pedir para que o Ministério das Relações Exteriores não concedesse vistos de trabalho no Brasil à equipe comandada por Spike Lee. A gestão do presidente Fernando Henrique Cardoso, no entanto, em momento algum cogitou atender aos clamores nada diplomáticos do governo do Rio.

Deve estar acostumado a fazer isso lá nos Estados Unidos e fez aqui também”, disse, ao acusar o cineasta de pagar uma taxa a Marcinho VP, considerado o chefe do tráfico no morro de Santa Marta, cenário da gravação do clipe.
Ao final da treta bizarra, o diretor ainda era cobrado a dar explicações. “A polícia tem muito pouca autoridade lá. Acho isso normal, mesmo em Nova York temos que pagar para gravar em determinados lugares”, disse Spike Lee.
